Just Hours After Being Released from Jail on His Own Recognizance, Suspect Generates Several Calls for Service and Later Rearrested for Trespassing
Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to several calls involving the same suspect who refused to leave several businesses after being asked to do so. During separate calls for service, employees trespassed him from each business and told him he would be arrested if he returned. He later appeared to dismiss this information, prompting an employee to call again, and Deputies arrested the suspect for Criminal Trespass 1st Degree. These calls began a little over five hours after he was released from jail on his own recognizance by order of the court on a felony charge of Burglary 2nd Degree and a misdemeanor charge of Theft 3rd Degree.
On August 31, 2026, at approximately 6:00 pm, the suspect, 43-year-old Dane D. Riffe, was released from jail on his own recognizance by order of Spokane County Superior Court. Riffe had been in custody since August 28, 2026, after he was arrested in Spokane Valley on charges of Burglary 2nd Degree and Theft 3rd Degree. During this incident, he attempted to leave a store, where he had previously been trespassed, without paying for food he ate and for store product he used while walking around.
On August 31, 2026, at approximately 11:10 pm, Deputies were called to a business in the 3700 block of S. Geiger Boulevard regarding a male (Riffe) who was loitering and disturbing customers. The employee asked that the male be moved away from the property, but at that time, they did not want to pursue charges. Deputies checked the area but could not locate Riffe, who had left prior to their arrival.
At approximately 12:10 am, the employee called back saying Riffe had returned. Deputies arrived and learned Riffe left again and was last seen walking to the east.
Deputies contacted employees of nearby businesses and were informed Riffe had been in and out of those locations numerous times throughout the night. They had warned him to leave, advising that if he didn’t, they would call law enforcement.
Deputies checked the area, located Riffe, and confirmed his identity. An employee of this business informed Riffe that he was being trespassed from the property and that if he returned, they would pursue charges and he would be arrested. He stated he understood, and with Deputies lacking probable cause to arrest him, he was released.
At approximately 2:40 am, Deputies responded to the same area after a different business reported that Riffe had returned and they wanted him to leave. The employee advised Riffe he was being trespassed from the property and warned that he would be arrested if he returned. Again, lacking probable cause, Deputies released him.
Shortly after, Deputies responded to a third business where Riffe again entered and refused to leave. Employees there advised him he was being trespassed from the property and warned that if he returned, he would be arrested, and he left the premises.
Deputies remained in the area in anticipation that they would be called again due to Riffe’s behavior, but they did not receive any immediate calls regarding him.
At approximately 4:20 am, Deputies responded to the original business where it was reported Riffe had returned and was again refusing to leave. When they arrived and contacted the employees, they learned Riffe had just walked out the doors.
Deputies located Riffe in the parking lot, still on the business’s property, where he had previously been trespassed. With probable cause now established to arrest Riffe for Criminal Trespass 1st Degree, they took him into custody.
Riffe was transported and booked back into the Spokane County Jail for Criminal Trespass 1st Degree.
